Would You Take Relationship Advice from Madonna?

Twice-divorced star joins new TV show The Marriage Ref. Would You Take Relationship Advice from Madonna?. With two failed marriages under her belt, Madonna is probably not the most qualified person to hand out marital advice. That didn't stop her giving her tuppence worth as she aired her views about one couple's relationship troubles on a new reality US TV show called The Marriage Ref.

And she clashed with Curb Your Enthusiasm star Larry David as they had different opinions on one married couple's trivial argument. Although the domestic spat was not clear from the trailer shown in the US on Sunday night, it seemed to be enough to get Madonna, Larry and the third celebrity panelist Ricky Gervais hot under the collar.

Argumentative: Madonna gets opinionated as she offers advice to sparring couples on the US reality show The Marriage Ref

At one point, Madonna, who was married to actor Sean Penn from 1985 to 1989 and divorced director Guy Ritchie in 2008 after eight years of marriage, puts her head in her hands and says: 'This is a recipe for disaster.'

She and Gervais, who isn't married but has been with producer and screenwriter Jane Fallon for 25 years, take the same side and argue with the 'Ref', who is there to take on the opinions of the celebrity panel and make a decision for the couple.

But Madonna soon got the hump when she realised that the Ref - US comedian Tom Papa - has the power to ignore the panel's votes on whether the husband or wife wins the row.

As Papa sides with David, she shouted: 'It’s two against two!'

Gervais backed her up and said: 'What are we here for? It was two to one! Why does he get the final vote?'

Papa says: 'You’re the advisers but I make the ruling.'

At the end of the show, Gervais said: ' 'This is the dream team for therapy. This is the weirdest show I have ever been on.'

David added: 'This is easily the most uncomfortable hour I've ever spent in my life', to which Madonna retorted: 'Why? because you're sitting next to a women who's standing up to you?'

The Marriage Ref has it's official premiere on Thursday night but American audiences were given a half-hour sneak preview on NBC on Sunday after the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics.

The show revolves around real life couples who are embroiled in an on-going fight. The celebrity panel is show a video clip of both sides of the argument.

The celebrity panel, consisting of recently married, recently divorced, or those with long histories of relationship success or failure, then discuss the merits of each side of the argument and vote on who they think is right.

Other celebrities will guest star as panelists on the show in upcoming episodes, including actresses Eva Longoria and Tina Fey and actors Alec Baldwin and Matthew Broderick.

They will try and settle domestic disputes including a couple arguing over whether the husband can park his motorcycle in the living room or another rowing over whether to stuff the family pet after it dies.

The show was the brainchild of actor and stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld who got the idea from his wife Jessica after they rowed in front of a friend who they asked to act as a referee on the dispute. But its future could be in doubt after it received negative reviews after the half hour special with many critics labeling it as a flop.

Time magazine's TV critic said it was 'the most God-awful mishmash of a comedy-variety show', while The Baltimore Sun said: 'Who knew Seinfeld could be this unfunny?'

Alan Sepinwall from the New Jersey paper the Star-Ledger said it was an an 'ugly, unfunny, patronising mess', while media website Gawker wondered whether, in TV historical terms, 'Jerry Seinfeld''s new show almost cancels out Seinfeld'. ( kompas.com )
